Set a Budget

While used boats are notoriously cheap, it is still possible to find a number of models that are out of your price range. To avoid falling in love with a boat you simply can’t afford, be sure to have a budget set beforehand. If you’re planning on financing your used boat, you’ll need to look at your monthly income and expenses—rather than the boat’s actual price tag—to see what you can afford. 

Features and Amenities

The used boat lot will likely be much more versatile than the new boat section of the dealership. These models will likely come with a variety of unique amenities, including customizations from the previous owner and even features that have been discontinued by manufacturers. To ensure you don't become overwhelmed by choice, we recommend taking a moment beforehand to list your preferences. This list should include everything from your budget and the size of your boat to more unique features such as the type of seating and entertainment amenities. 

Complete an Inspection

Once you’ve got a model in mind, it’s time to complete a thorough inspection of your used boat. This is one of the most important aspects of purchasing a used boat, and we strongly recommend doing some research beforehand or hiring a professional to do the job. Because used boat inspections can take quite some time, we recommend setting up an appointment for a test drive and completing the inspection beforehand. If everything seems to check out, you’re welcome to start up the engine and see how it runs. Once your boat has passed this general inspection, don’t forget to locate the HIN—or hull identification number—and run it through a boat reporting agency. This way you’re aware of any accidents, damages, or repairs that have been completed on your model before you decide to purchase it.
